Balcary Flat Rock - Dumfries by Jai McKinney

Access to Balcary Flat Rock involves a 20-30 minute walk across fields, through several gates, mostly uphill. The final section follows a coastal path along the cliff edge, before descending onto the flat rock platform at the end.
Care is needed on the final descent, especially in wet or windy conditions, as rocks can be slippery.

 The seabed is mixed ground,
Closer in you will be fishing over more snaggy brocken ground with the bottom clearing the further out you go.

Pulley rig (in close) for targeting bull huss and conger eel.
Two-hook flapper / loop rig (50 yards+) for targeting rays.
Typically fished with size 2/0 hooks.
Adapting rigs to suit distance and ground type is key to fishing Balcary effectively.

Balcary has a strong reputation as a specimen venue. It was once notorious for producing huge cod, though numbers have declined and only a handful are now reported each year.
Species you can expect include: Thornback Ray, Dogfish, Conger eel, Bull huss, Whiting, Pollock, Coalfish, Cod, Smooth hound, occasional Tope.

In 2025, there were sightings of spur dog and even a rare for this area common skate. While these species are not currently realistically targetable, it's encouraging to see them returning, and hopefully numbers will continue to grow in the coming years.

Balcary can be fished all year round, but I particularly enjoy it during the summer months.
Bait choices will be Peeler crab, Lugworm, Ragworm, Mackerel and Sand eel.
Peeler crab is especially effective for Rays and Smooth hound during the warmer months.

Being mindful and careful is critical at Balcary and it must be noted that the rocks can be very slippery especially after rain (good footwear is essential) and the cliff-edge walk and final descent will require care.
Avoid fishing during strong onshore winds or heavy swell.
Phone signal is good, which is reassuring, but anglers should still fish sensibly and within conditions.

Balcary can be suitable for beginners, but only if fishing with someone experienced who understands the access, ground, and conditions.

It offers variety, the chance of quality fish, and the feeling that anything is possible on the right day. While it no longer produces cod like it once did, it remains a brilliant venue and with recent rare captures, the future looks promising.
Fish it with respect, choose conditions carefully, and Balcary can deliver some unforgettable sessions.
